Bagrati Cathedral was built in 1003 during the reign of Bagrat III and became a major monument of Georgian culture and state symbolism.
Historical records describe how representatives from many parts of the country gathered for the cathedral blessing, giving it national significance.
The cathedral was damaged in the 17th century during Ottoman attacks and later further affected in 1770 fighting, but it has since been restored.
Architecturally, the temple is a triconch-type cross-domed structure with a large interior, two-storey sections, carved gates, and historically rich details.
The site entered the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1994 and was later removed after restoration.
