Detailed Information

Nikortsminda is a domed temple in the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region, in the village of Nikortsminda.

Its origins are connected to the period after the creation of the Racha Saeristavo at the end of the 10th century, and the temple became an important cultural center.

Nikortsminda Monastery has been included in the UNESCO tentative list since October 24, 2007.

Rehabilitation work in 2012 revealed 16th-century frescoes in soot-covered gates, including founder imagery and inscriptions referencing the painter Javakhadze.

The church is considered a masterpiece of national architecture from the early 11th century (1010-1014), with notable facade decoration.

The monument did not undergo major structural changes through most of its history, which is rare; the dome remains preserved in original form.

Historical records and travel accounts from the 18th century describe its large stone construction, enclosure, and royal burials associated with the site.
